The Polizei brought Zeke to a nice building a couple miles from Ute’s apartment. It was one of those newer structures of glass and granite and marble, more resembling a bank or stock brokerage house than a police station. In all of his travels to dozens of countries, he had never been brought in for questioning by the police. In fact, he had never even gotten a speeding ticket. What did they want with him? He had done nothing wrong.

Without them taking photos or prints like they do on American TV shows, they simply escorted him into a nice room, where he guessed they had hidden cameras. Again, the room looked like it could have been a small conference room like that at his future ex-wife’s law firm instead of a place they brought people to beat answers out of them. Zeke thanked God he wasn’t in World War II Germany, or he guessed they’d be hooking him up to electrical current to some sensitive body parts. Or maybe summary execution for spitting on the sidewalk.

Instead, the older Polizei officer simply sat across from Zeke at the table while the younger officer took a chair in a corner with a pad of paper. Still, Zeke knew they were recording him. What would he say? He could say nothing. Did he have the same rights like those he would be afforded in America? The right to keep his mouth shut. He wasn’t sure. But he also knew he had done nothing wrong.

“I am Lieutenant Gerhard Beck,” the older man said, “and she is Detective Schwarz.” They both had three stars on their epaulets, but his were silver and hers were subdued green. Their uniforms were blue. Back when Zeke was stationed in Germany all Polizei wore green uniforms, and Zeke and his friends had called them junior park rangers.

The lieutenant ran through Zeke’s name and address and how he had traveled to Germany.

“That’s correct,” Zeke said. “But you can call me Zeke. Everyone does.”

“Yes,” Lieutenant Beck said, “I understand you host a show in America. A hunting show.”

What was this guy trying to do? Build rapport? Get his autograph? Zeke nodded.

“Please answer,” Beck said.

“Well, I don’t host it anymore,” Zeke said. “The show was cancelled.”

The Polizei man checked his paperwork in front of him. “So, you are unemployed.”

“I’m between jobs,” Zeke said. “Weighing my options. I hope to get my show back with another channel. But, yes, at the moment I am without employment.”

The lieutenant smiled. “I see. Are you collecting unemployment compensation?”

“No. I don’t need any money from my government, even though they’ve taken more than they need from me.”

The not unattractive detective seemed unconcerned as she scribbled something in her notebook. She had short blonde hair, much like Ute’s, and had to be no more than thirty-years-old. She was without expressive facial lines, and Zeke guessed she would never get them if she didn’t smile or grimace or otherwise express herself.

“Do I need a lawyer?” Zeke asked.

“I don’t know,” Beck said.
